Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing these drugs should be cognizant of the potential of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a more gradual creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs explains the amplified rebound.
These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
A Chronic Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment is often ongoing.
This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a sudden resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger activating and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Widespread Adoption
Figures indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle support.
